CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Estelle Bright
Character Canon: Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
History: Ta-daa.
AU History: Estelle Bright was born in Caldera, the child of Cassius Bright and his wife. She was an energetic child growing up, who her parents had a bit of difficulty keeping up with. Her father was often away, though he still cared for her, being a member of Caldera's military forces when she was younger. He earned a reputation as an incredible commander and warrior alike, though Estelle was too young to understand this.
When she was six, a large wild Pokémon attack infiltrated into Caldera. The resulting attack caused quite a stir. In the attack, a clock tower in Caldera was knocked over and almost crushed Estelle. Her mother pushed her out of the way, but was crushed instead. Estelle got to see the whole thing. Cassius was leading some of Caldera's forces against the incursion.
Afterward, guilty over his wife's death, Cassius decided to retire from the military and raise Estelle. He joined the Seekers, both to have a livelihood, and answer questions he formed during his time in the army. He raised Estelle more actively after that; he spent some time away, but he had the help of friends in Caldera to help raise her.
Estelle decided, after seeing her mother sacrifice herself to save her, to be as brave as her mother was. That influenced her tremendously; it made her headstrong, brave, and often a little reckless. She became a rambunctious young woman, and maybe a little wild because she didn't have as much supervision as she should have, thanks to her father being away on Seekers work for stretches.
To help her get by, he brought home a friend for her one day: a young Eevee. Despite Calderan views of Pokémon, Estelle quickly grew attached to the Eevee, and he became a partner and a friend, as much as a comrade. She named him Adol.
She never understood her father's importance in Caldera, besides a few mentions and some old war buddies, but when she turned eight, she got her first clue; she developed the same incredible strength and dexterity that her father had as an Enlightened. She took after him, it seemed, and she began to train with her father when he was home.
She never really saw what Cassius was up to, or that his work led him to do quite a bit of exploration and investigation. She had a happy, normal, if adventuresome childhood. When she was eleven, though, Cassius came home with a boy her age, with black hair and golden eyes; she questioned where he came from, but she never got a firm answer. His name was Joshua, and Cassius took him in and raised him as his own.
After that, Estelle and Joshua became something between best friends and adoptive siblings; Joshua was just a little too secretive and entered her life too late to ever really be a brother, but he was still part of the Bright family. They went to school together in Caldera, and began practicing with their weapons and abilities. Adol helped.
When she turned sixteen, Estelle decided to join the Seekers as a junior member, and follow in her father's footsteps. He encouraged her in this, and with Adol to lend a hand, he could be pretty sure that she wouldn't get into too much trouble.
Hopefully.
Canon Personality: Estelle is an energetic and cheerful young woman. She approaches life with gusto and she's hard to really get down. She is a naturally happy person, an optimist who always looks on the bright side of life. She also doesn't really sit still: she's a physically active person, who likes to take a hands-on approach to life. It makes her a bit touchy feely -- if in the sling an arm around someone's shoulders way, rather than hugging everyone she sees -- and it means she can be a handful.
She's also damn near fearless. That optimism means that in a lot of situations, Estelle just doesn't get scared. Dangerous things might make her look up, might make her pay attention, but they don't make Estelle get scared and run away. When she does get scared, she tends to go with a fight response instead of a flight response.
A lot of this comes from the way Estelle is cocky. She has plenty of confidence in herself, which is a good thing, but sometimes that confidence gets the better of her. Estelle can jump into situations without thinking, assuming blindly that she can handle them. She is headstrong and impulsive, and when it comes down to it, stubborn. She has trouble with looking before she leaps, and if she thinks that she needs to do something dangerous, she'll do it and the consequences be damned.
She thinks with her heart, not her head. Estelle is an emotional person, not a logical one. This makes her jump into things without considering the consequences, but it also makes her good at reaching out to people when they need it, and saying something instead of saying nothing. She wears her heart on her sleeve; she doesn't hide who she is, and while it can get her in trouble, she's proud of that.
She is, however, not the most intellectual person. Even if some people in Trails in the Sky imply it sometimes, Estelle is not actually a stupid girl. She can follow arguments and reason things out, with time, but she may need prompting. She is simply not very attentive to detail and forgetful. She might miss things if they aren't pointed out to her; she doesn't always catch subtleties. She also forgets things and isn't that well organized; this is someone who shows up late and forgot to brush their teeth.
That emotional nature also means that when she gets angry or irritated, it shows. She doesn't hide those feelings well. When she feels slighted or annoyed, Estelle quickly gets grumpy and will express it. She can even get a little bit sassy. This is especially true if her pride is pricked. But, if she gets angry -- if someone she cares for gets hurt, does something dumb that gets them hurt, or does something hurtful -- it comes out fast and furious. She will shout, yell, and express herself very clearly.
But the flip side of that coin is that Estelle is one of the most loyal and most loving people you'll meet. If she cares about something, she'll move heaven and earth for them. She will stick by someone no matter what they might be going through, and try to make it better for them.
When she feels like she has really let someone she cares about down or driven them off, though, Estelle also takes it hard. When she gets uncomfortable or doesn't feel safe, she can become withdrawn, and that exuberant and outgoing personality can vanish. Feeling like she let someone down, or worse, hurt them will make her all the things she usually is not: hesitant, reticent, quiet, and distant.
This comes from Estelle's abandonment issues. They aren't crippling, but they're there. The loss of her mother may have inspired her to be braver, but it makes her scared of losing (or worse, driving off) family that she still has. It isn't helped by the fact that Cassius was gone a lot, and while he looked after her and cared for her, that sometimes sticks home. Estelle tries to keep them close and keep them happy, to make sure that she doesn't lose them.
AU Deviation: A lot of the particulars are different, even if the broad outlines are similar. In the canon material, Estelle is from Liberl. Cassius was a General in Liberl's army. Here, they are both from Caldera, and Cassius was a well-ranked, highly regarded commander in Caldera's military ten years ago, instead of nearly the supreme commander.
Similarly, Cassius and later Estelle joined the Seekers instead of the Bracers. The Bracers were more of a one-size-fits-all adventuring guild, while the Seekers are much more focused on uncovering truths about the world. This means Estelle has a little bit more focus on that: she's curious about the world. She wants answers to things she doesn't know. She sees the job of a Seeker very, very broadly perhaps -- including helping everyone who needs it so all can enjoy and use their knowledge! -- and she wants adventure. But, unlike her source material, she starts out actively trying to find the truth about the world.
Also, Estelle doesn't have an Orbment. Orbments will be discussed below; she wasn't good at using one at first, but had good flexibility and potential with her Orbment. She has had trouble using non-Fighting and non-Normal moves to start with, however, in a similar vein. Estelle is way more concerned with hitting things a lot. I'll discuss that below.
Lastly, her feelings on religion are different. She has Calderan sensibilities, rather than adhering to the faith of the Septian Church; she's not quite an atheist but she's not entirely sold on this gods stuff.
Canon Abilities: Characters in Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky get two different types of abilities, besides the ability to use a weapon. Estelle is a very well-rounded fighter with a lot of potential. She takes after her dad and, prominently, she uses a big quarterstaff to smack the crap out of people. She is also good at using magic, which I'll discuss below.
The first special ability that Estelle gets are Crafts. These are basically character-unique physical attacks and abilities in Trails in the Sky. Estelle gets four: one that boost her friend's strengths, one that taunts nearby enemies, an area of effect attack, and an energy wave attack. There are also S. Crafts, which are high-powered attacks like Limit Breaks or Hi-Ougis, complete with cut-ins. Estelle's both involve lots and lots of single target damage, via beating the shit out of someone with her staff. Her very endgame, in the sequel series from Japan that I have never played, one involves turning into a phoenix and blasting into people.
The second special ability are called Orbal Arts. These are, in a word, magic. In the game, people load up various colors of processed quartzes into a device called an Orbment, which unlocks kinds of magic. Estelle, notably, can use any kind of quartz to cast some serious magic. She is talented at it... but noted, in the game, to have trouble learning it at first.
She's also noted to -- and shown to, when he shows up to the rescue with a staff (which he took up after giving up his sword) -- take after Cassius Bright, her father.
Enlightened Abilities: Estelle is a God of War. She's the daughter of Cassius Bright, who took after his skills as an Enlightened. At Brave New World, that means she's a God of War, with Fighting, Normal, and Fire as her types. She has a lot of potential, but she doesn't really show it much yet, besides just being strong, tough, and good at smacking things around.
In her current evolution, she actually doesn't have many Fire abilities. The ones she does, she can really only make the baseline stuff -- sparks and the like -- with a lot of concentration and effort. She instead has a few simple buff abilities, and a lot of moves that consist of various Fighting and Normal blows against her opponents. The strongest is a Fighting move called Pummel, like her S. Craft. She still has her trusty staff.
Her second evolution makes her a full-fledged fire user on top of this. She can sling fireballs, use area of effect attacks with fire moves, and surround her staff with fire. It doesn't change her appearance, thanks to the Normal type. She also gets some improved attacks, including an attack called Barrage, like her second S. Craft.
Her final evolution gives her a lot more firepower, both with Fire, Fighting, and Normal attacks. When fighting, she will sometimes have a fiery aura around her, which Estelle can turn on and off. She also gets some Flying and Ground type moves, which partly represents how she could use a lot of magic types in the game -- but also because her final move is turning into a fiery phoenix, and sweeping down into her opponents.
She has a quarterstaff, but it's just part of her fighting moves, versus being a unique item.
Starter Pokémon: Eevee. It's named Adol.Hooray for video game developer company jokes.
Notes/Special Considerations: None here!
SAMPLES
If desired, you may answer some of the following questions. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie, the purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.
1) What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
"Dad always says they're there to help us and make us stronger. And I know some people say they're there to make us fat. And roast fletchling is awfully tasty. Erm, I'm getting off topic. My little buddy, Adol, has been my best friend or second best friend forever, though. So it's companionship and friendship! That's what they do. They become like part of the family!"
2) What do you seek for humanity’s future?
"Uh... that's kind of heavy, isn't it? I'm a Seeker, so I guess I want to help people find out about the past! And protect them and make sure they have a future to look forward to. Yeah! Go Seekers!"
3) To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
"Is this a trick question? You don't ever leave your friend behind! You go get them, no matter what!"
4) What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
"Union's so weird. I like Adol a lot, but they're really fond of theirs? I guess they're nice, though. So, um, those people at the Breeding Center. Because they're like the moms and dads of all Union's Pokémon. Sheesh."
5) What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
"You guys are being super formal, you know that? Okay, okay, um. I, Estelle Bright, most charming and best and strongest of all of Caldera, feel that... stop looking at me like that! Gosh, okay, whatever, I guess... being friendly and saying what you think. I like honest people. We shouldn't lie to people, right?"
6) The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?
"What! One of them burnt the city before Caldera to the ground! If one of those jerks shows back up, they aren't the ones who are going to have to worry about getting judged! I've got some questions for them, y'know!"
(Partial lie. Estelle would be nervous as hell and not sure how she'd be judged. But her Calderan sensibilities are showing here.)
7) You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?
"My trusty staff and my stunning intellect, duh! Next!"
7.1) No, Estelle, answer seriously.
"Did I stutter?"
7.2) This is a serious matter! Answer the question!
"Hello? En-light-ened. I would totally smack them with my staff and walk home. I'd be back in time to cook dinner. And it would taste delicious, thank you very much."
8) You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?
"Wisdom is the goal of the Seekers! But, you know, if there was treasure or technology to spare, then... that would be okay, too!"
9) When encountering a rare and powerful Pokémon, what is most important? Researching it, bonding with it, or defeating it? Why?
"Researching it. You want to know where those things came from, so they don't get the jump on you later! But if it seems nice or strong, or better yet, both... then make friends, too! And if it's mean and doesn't want to be researched, clobber it."
10) What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
"MOUNTAINS! MOUNTAINS MOUNTAINS MOUNTAINS! I mean. Um. The forest? The cave? Which one's the right answer for us Seekers, anyways? You don't have to sigh at me about this!"
APPLICATION REVISION
Additional History:
Estelle did quite a bit while she was in the game! She was a Seeker, who came to Union when the Seekers first set-up shop. She gradually grew from a brand new Seeker, coasting on the fame of her father, into a respectable one in her own right -- if a little more focused on the "find new places" side of things than the "learn things" side. She also began to meet the gods and want to do something about them.
She evolved twice, too. Estelle's first evolution was while she was practicing and shot a fireball. Her second was when she visited the tropical island with Xiu. It involved a home run against a Wailmer.
The last major arc she did was the liberation of Sanctuary. She was shaken to her core by fighting others -- it reminded her of when she lost her mother, and her distaste of war -- and especially the revelation about what Sanctuary was doing. Estelle took some time off, after that; she went back to help the Calderan office of the Seekers after I dropped her. She isn't over what happened but she is less shook up, and able to think about it more rationally.
...As rationally as Estelle does. And thus, she is coming back to Union!
This area is for characters who were previously in the game that you are re-apping. Please put in any information about what they did while in the game, as well as what they were doing during the time that they were not, here. This needs to be attached to your application, after the samples.
